Pakistan’s rising actress and social media influencer Sehar Hashmi has spoken openly about being compared to Indian actor Emraan Hashmi.
She said criticism has helped her become a better actress, but some comments—particularly those comparing her to Emraan Hashmi—were disappointing and made little sense.
Sehar began her acting career with the drama serial Zulm and quickly established herself in the entertainment industry. However, she also came under criticism for appearing in relatively bold on-screen scenes.
She said she only performed scenes that were part of the script and which the director wanted to portray according to his creative vision.
“Every actor works according to the demands of their character and the script,” she said. “I find it ridiculous. Honestly, I’m neither the first nor the last actress to have hugged someone on screen.”
The actress revealed that her director had assured her that if she was comfortable performing those scenes, she should go ahead with them.
When asked why she received most of the criticism while the male actors faced comparatively less backlash, Sehar laughed and replied that it might have been because of the Emraan Hashmi comparisons. However, she admitted that the controversy has made her reconsider doing such scenes in the future.
“To be honest, I will be more cautious about this in the future because if we’re making dramas for the audience and they don’t like it, then we won’t do it. But please don’t put me at gunpoint over it,” she said.
Speaking about the impact of online hate, Sehar said that whenever something good happens to you, people still find faults because not everyone wants to see you succeed.
She also revealed that there was a time when she used to cry herself to sleep at night, but said she received strong support from her fellow actors and friends during that difficult period.
