During Eid ul Adha, one of the biggest concerns for people is how to prevent sacrificial meat from spoiling for several weeks. This is not a difficult task if the meat is stored properly.
In fact, meat can be preserved for weeks, months, or even a year, and the freezer is considered the best option for this purpose. However, there are several important methods for storing meat properly.
Before placing meat in the freezer, it is necessary to pack it properly and protect it from air exposure. For this purpose, use plastic bags and aluminum foil designed for freezer use. If these are not available, airtight containers such as plastic or freezer-safe jars and cans can also be used.
As many bones as possible should be removed because bones occupy more space in the freezer, forcing it to work harder.
The freezer compartment in a refrigerator can also be used for this purpose, as an empty freezer consumes more electricity.
Raw meat can be stored frozen for 4 to 12 months, while raw minced meat remains suitable in the freezer for up to three months. Cooked meat can be preserved for 2 to 3 months.
If you do not have access to a refrigerator or freezer, a water cooler can also be used without electricity, or temporarily during power breakdowns. For this method, the cooler should be filled with ice to keep it cold.
First place some ice at the bottom of the cooler, then place the meat on top and cover it with more ice. Make sure the meat remains surrounded by ice, and add more ice as it melts. This is one of the oldest methods of preserving meat.
For another preservation method, meat can be completely covered with curing salt in an airtight container or bag and kept in a cool place for up to one month. Before cooking, wash off the excess salt.
