President Zardari arrives in Doha for UN social development conference

DOHA: President Asif Ali Zardari has arrived in Doha to attend the United Nations (UN) World Social Development Conference begins today in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Upon his arrival at Hamad International Airport, senior Qatari officials and Pakistan’s ambassador warmly received the President and his delegation.

President Zardari is representing Pakistan at the global forum, which is being held under the theme “Sustainable Development: Renewing Hope.” The conference brings together heads of state, policymakers, experts, international organizations, and representatives of social institutions from around the world. Its objective is to promote poverty reduction, improve health and education, and ensure equal opportunities for sustainable growth.

In his keynote address, President Zardari will brief the international community on Pakistan’s efforts to promote social development, generate employment, and boost economic growth. He will highlight the role of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in poverty alleviation, social protection, and empowerment of vulnerable communities.

The President will also underscore Pakistan’s alignment with the Doha Political Declaration and global development commitments. He is expected to emphasize the need for enhanced financial resources through initiatives such as the SDG Stimulus for social and environmental transformation and China’s Global Development Initiative.

During the conference, President Zardari will meet the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments, and global issues. He is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid. Additionally, President Zardari will hold discussions with heads and representatives of various international organizations attending the conference.

Schedule

The Doha gathering aims to accelerate global efforts to eradicate poverty, promote full employment and decent work, and enhance social inclusion ensuring that no one is left behind in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

The event seeks to close existing gaps, renew international dedication to social development, and inject fresh momentum into the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Summit opens on November 4 with the adoption of the Doha Political Declaration and addresses by the President of the UN General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the Amir of Qatar, and the President of the Economic and Social Council.

The first round table, also on November 4, will focus on reinforcing the three key pillars of social development including poverty eradication, full and productive employment with decent work for all, and social inclusion.

The second round table, scheduled for November 5, will review progress, identify remaining challenges, and discuss strategies to accelerate the implementation of the Copenhagen commitments and the 2030 Agenda. The three-day Summit will conclude on November 6 with closing remarks by the President of the General Assembly.
