Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on World Press Freedom Day, paid tribute to journalists, columnists, reporters, editors, broadcasters, and all individuals associated with journalism in Pakistan and around the world for their selfless services.
He stated that the professional duties performed by those associated with journalism are a guarantee of an informed and aware society. Timely dissemination and broadcasting of authentic, unbiased, and fact-based news form the foundation of true journalism.
He emphasized that it is the responsibility of every journalist to prevent the spread of propaganda, fake news, and unverified or unauthenticated information in line with their professional ethics. Journalists are not only custodians of professional values but also of social values.
The Prime Minister noted that this year, World Press Freedom Day is being observed under the theme “Shaping a Peaceful Future,” which reflects the needs of the modern era. Journalists deserve a dignified, safe, and conducive environment to perform their duties.
He added that in the present era, peace and stability are not achieved through diplomacy alone, but through credible information, responsible journalism, and public opinion, all of which play a decisive role.
According to Shehbaz Sharif, media has the potential to play a constructive role in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and social relations between countries. Accurate representation of viewpoints often helps resolve complex issues—this is the hallmark of responsible journalism.
In his message, he reiterated that Pakistan is a peaceful country that prioritizes dialogue and negotiations, from differences of opinion to long-term conflict resolution. In the current situation, Pakistan is playing a positive role on the diplomatic front to reduce tensions, promote dialogue, and restore peace in the region. In this context, international media has appreciated Pakistan’s efforts.
He further said that besides diplomacy and peacetime efforts, the national media also fulfilled an important responsibility during “Marka-e-Haq” and “Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos,” presenting Pakistan’s stance with clarity and restraint while keeping the public informed and countering misinformation.
He praised the role of journalists, stating that those moments reflected not only the capabilities of the armed forces but also the strength of national unity, in which responsible media played a key part.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, saying their courage reminds us that press freedom is a valuable asset.
He noted that the media landscape is rapidly evolving with the adoption of innovation. Digital platforms are playing a crucial role in shaping national and global public opinion. In such a situation, media has an important role in effectively projecting national identity and perspective globally.
He stressed that media organizations must adapt to digital innovation with both speed and a sense of responsibility. The spread of fake news and organized disinformation campaigns poses a real threat to national harmony and global reputation.
According to him, ensuring both speed and credibility in news delivery is essential. He urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of verification, integrity, and professionalism so that competition in the fast-paced digital era does not come at the cost of truth.
He said media reflects the country’s social, political, and economic diversity and contributes to national unity and stability. Journalism highlights important public issues and plays a vital role in raising awareness.
On this occasion, Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting press freedom and taking all possible measures to promote it and ensure a conducive environment.
In conclusion, he called for a renewed collective commitment, stating that the government will continue to play its role in safeguarding press freedom so that media can fulfill its responsibilities truthfully in a supportive environment, and together, build a strong, peaceful, confident, and globally respected Pakistan.
