OKARA: Former Chief Minister of Punjab Mian Manzoor Wattoo has passed away. He was 86 years old.
The news of his passing has been confirmed by his wife Rubina Shaheen Wattoo.
Manzoor Wattoo has been a part of Pakistan’s politics for a very long time. A very important chapter in Pakistan’s politics has come to an end with his passing away.
According to family sources, he has been ill for quite a long time.
Upon hearing the news of his demise, the whole country is disheartened.
He also served his country as Speaker Punjab Assembly.
The time of his funeral will be announced later.
Former prime minister and PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif has expressed his sorrow over the sad demise of Mian Manzoor Wattoo.
Born on August 14, 1939, Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo entered politics in 1983 after his election as chairman of the Okara District Council.
He later led a successful no-confidence move that ousted the Pakistan Muslim League–N government of Ghulam Haider Wyne.
With backing from the Pakistan Peoples Party, Wattoo became Punjab chief minister, despite support from only a small group of dissenting lawmakers.
After the 2008 general elections, which he contested as an independent, he won two National Assembly seats from Okara.
He subsequently rejoined the Pakistan Peoples Party.
