Mamya counter notice to Arsalan Butt

Mamya Shajaffar responded with a counter legal notice Rs1 billion on Tuesday night to fellow actor Arslan Butt’s legal notice, accusing her of defamation for making claims about his behaviour while they were working together.

The copy of the legal notice was shared on her Instagram page, terming his May 22 legal notice “false, misconceived, legally defective, and apparently with the sole purpose of pressurizing and intimidate her after frequently harrasing her.

Her counter-notice rejected the allegations stated in Butt’s notice. It states: “It is to make clear that my client never made any false, fabricated or malicious allegation against your client. Whatever was stated by my client during the said interview was based on facts, actual personal experiences, surrounding circumstances and information backed with evidence, witnesses and electronic material presently in possession of my client. Your client is not oblivious to his conduct.

“The interview itself does not contain any direct mention to ‘sexual harassment’ in the specific manner falsely reflected in your notice.

It further argues that the interview reflected Shajaffar’s “personal life experiences” made in exercise of her “lawful and constitutional right of expression and self-protection”.

The notice requires Butt to immediately withdraw his notice and issue public apology for “harassment, intimidation, reputational harm and malicious legal threats” It also demands Butt to pay Rs1 billion in compensation for damaging the repute, mental stress and harassment.

It also warns that in case of non-compliment within 14 days would lead to civil, criminal and regulatory proceedings under the Punjab Defamation Act, 2024 and the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010.

It is worth noting that earlier this week Actor Arslan Butt had sent a legal notice to fellow actor Mamya Shajaffar over an interview in which she termed his behaviour “uncomfortable”, while working on a joint project.

The notice demanded Shajaffar “withdraw accusations”, “remove the defamatory conten”, “issue a clear, unconditional public apology and retraction” on YouTube and “to avoid repeating such allegations in the future”.
