A fake social media account named “BRICS News” (@BRICSinfo) has recently been attempting to damage the reputation of China, Russia, and the BRICS forum. The account appears to imitate an official BRICS handle.
The account has stated in its bio that it is “not an official government account” nor affiliated with BRICS. However, for many social media users, it appears to be an official BRICS account, which is negatively impacting the credibility of the global forum.
According to details, an investigation into the account revealed that it is linked to @WatcherGuru, a social media platform focused on cryptocurrency. Watcher Guru is a forum that provides news related to Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi, blockchain, and finance. The founders and team members of this platform are reportedly of Indian origin, further raising questions about the account’s credibility.
The account has been actively spreading misleading information and speculation during the recent tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly by using the names of China and Russia. Its apparent aim has been to disrupt the peace process and provoke neutral countries like China and Russia against the United States.
There have been calls for China, Russia, Brazil, and the BRICS Secretariat to take immediate notice of this fake account and request X to permanently suspend it, in order to prevent further damage to the reputation of the global forum.
