Web Desk: Manoj Tiwari, a member of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, has triggered widespread debate after comments about the Indian rupee and the U.S. dollar drew criticism and mockery online.
Speaking during a public interaction, Tiwari suggested that if Indians stopped treating one rupee as its current value and instead considered two rupees equivalent to one, the US dollar would “automatically” fall to 45 rupees.
He also argued that fluctuations in the dollar’s value do not directly impact most Indians because daily transactions are conducted primarily in local currency.
“Since the majority of people conduct their everyday transactions in Indian currency, the rise in the value of the dollar does not immediately affect them,” Tiwari said.
The remarks quickly spread across social media platforms, where users questioned the economic reasoning behind the statement.
Several commentators pointed out that currency exchange rates are influenced by broader economic indicators including inflation, trade balances, foreign reserves, investment flows and monetary policy.
Others highlighted that changes in the dollar’s value directly affect fuel prices, imported goods, technology products and overseas expenses in India.
One social media user reacted sarcastically, writing: “India is blessed to have such genuinely brilliant minds.”
Meanwhile, economic analysts noted that the strength of the U.S. dollar plays a significant role in shaping India’s economy.
India relies heavily on imports, particularly crude oil, making exchange rate fluctuations important for transportation costs and inflation.
A stronger dollar can also increase the cost of international trade and imported consumer products, eventually affecting household expenses across the country.
The controversy added to ongoing political and economic discussions in India surrounding inflation, purchasing power and the rupee’s performance against major global currencies.
However, neither Tiwari nor BJP officials immediately issued any clarification or response following the online backlash.
