United States (US) President Donald Trump is no longer coming to India, as he has not postponed but cancelled his entire visit.

The development has come forward amid the reports that both countries are not really on good terms because of tariffs tensions.

He was coming for Quad summit. The summit is scheduled to be hosted in New Delhi.

Currently, Modi is in China for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Head of States meeting.

Trump imposed tariffs

Since returning to office in January, Trump has introduced a sweeping global programme of tariffs, and threatened many more.

It is pertinent to mention that in recent weeks, the White House has imposed successive tariffs on Indian imports.

The tariffs include a 25 per cent penalty for transactions with Russia that are a key source of funds for its war in Ukraine.

India, a vital strategic US partner in the Indo-Pacific, has shown no signs of stopping its purchases, calling the tariffs unfair and vowing to choose the “best deal” on buying oil to protect its 1.4 billion people.

The tariff setback has sent the Indian government into firefighting mode.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to cut taxes to mitigate the impact of the tariffs which will disrupt millions of livelihoods across the country’s export-driven industries that supply everything from clothes to diamonds and shrimp to American consumers.
