Punjab declares flood emergency in all hospitals

WEBDESK: The Punjab Healthcare Commission has declared a flood emergency across all hospitals in the province. Special instructions have been issued to private hospitals to ensure medical support for flood victims.

According to the directives, 35 percent of beds in all private hospitals must be reserved for people affected by the floods. Treatment and medicines for these patients will be provided free of cost.

Emergency units and intensive care wards will remain open round the clock for flood victims. Hospitals have also been ordered to closely monitor waterborne diseases and strengthen reporting systems.

To protect hospital premises, sandbags and water pumps must be placed at all entrances. Private hospitals have been told to coordinate with local NGOs and ambulance services for patient transfer when required.

Hospitals have also been directed to keep their biomedical equipment fully functional, including ventilators, X-ray machines, and CT scanners.

The Commission further ordered hospitals to prepare evacuation plans to move patients safely in case of worsening flood conditions.

As of 30th August 2025, floods in Punjab have affected over 1.4 million residents.

More than 265,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas.

Officials say intense monsoon rains and releases from upstream dams in India swelled the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers.

Rising waters have submerged over 1,700 villages, damaging crops, homes, and livestock.

At least 17 deaths have been reported, including 13 from the latest downpour.
