PDMA issues high flood alert for Ravi River

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert over the risk of high to very high flood levels in the Ravi River.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, in the next 48 hours, very high flood levels are expected to pass through Jassar, Shahdara, and Head Balloki. Commissioners of Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, and deputy commissioners of the concerned districts have been alerted.

The spokesperson said that the water level in the Ravi River is continuously rising. At present, a high-level flood has been recorded at Jassar, while a low-level flood has been observed at Shahdara.

PDMA reports that the inflow of water at Jassar is 111,000 cusecs, while at Shahdara, the flow is 46,000 cusecs.

The PDMA Punjab has directed administrations of districts along the Ravi River to take emergency measures.

Citizens living within the riverbed have been instructed to evacuate immediately, while mosque announcements are being made to keep people informed of the situation.

The spokesperson emphasised that no negligence will be tolerated in ensuring the safety of lives and property.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with the administration during emergencies. By following precautionary measures, potential losses can be minimised.

NDMA weather alert: rain alert for Punjab, Azad Kashmir districts

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert regarding expected heavy rainfall in several districts of Punjab and Azad Kashmir.

According to NDMA, heavy rains are likely in Punjab’s districts of Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, and Kasur. Within the next 12 to 24 hours, torrential rains are also expected in Jhelum, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, and Pakpattan.

The alert warns of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing of streams and nullahs, as well as risks of landslides and flash floods in hilly regions.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), intermittent rain has been forecast over the next 12 to 24 hours in Neelum Valley, Bagh, Kotli, Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, and Haveli.

NDMA cautioned that heavy rainfall may trigger flooding in low-lying areas, cause hill torrents, and lead to landslides in mountainous terrain. The surge in hill torrents could also disrupt traffic flow on connecting roads.

Separately, an alert has already been issued regarding the rising water levels in the River Sutlej and the possibility of flooding. Large-scale evacuation operations are already underway in areas near the Sutlej.

Punjab PDMA, Rescue 1122 and Pakistan Army engineers have been busy in relief and rescue measures to address the changing flood situation.

NDMA has urged citizens not to travel beyond necessity and to avoid any contact with rivers, streams, and low-lying grounds.

The citizens have been requested to stay updated via TV, radio, mobile alerts, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app, and vigilantly follow the instructions issued.
