Imran Khan PIMS medical report

Credible international media organizations have declared the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) narrative regarding the party’s founding chairman Imran Khan’s solitary confinement in prison, alleged torture, and medical problems to be completely contrary to the facts, and have rejected it outright.

International media organizations say that the position presented by the Government of Pakistan and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting appears to be accurate and based on the actual facts in this regard. All international media outlets have described reports circulating about Imran Khan as mere speculation.

Consensus Reporting by International Media

Some of the world’s leading and most credible newspapers and news agencies, including The Washington Post, The Guardian, CNN, Associated Press (AP), Reuters, AFP, and The Canadian Press, have openly presented the Pakistani government’s position in their recent analyses and reports.

International media organizations have written that reports about the alleged hardships faced by Imran Khan do not correspond with the facts on the ground. These respected electronic and print media organizations have clearly stated the Pakistani government’s position and written that the narrative presented by PTI is not based on facts.

Journalistic Support for the Government’s Position and Ministry of Information Statement

International organizations have included clarifications issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as primary references in their reports.

According to international journalists, the government’s position regarding facilities inside the prison and the provision of prisoners’ rights appears more transparent and plausible.

Following this endorsement, the PTI narrative that it has been attempting to present to the international community for some time has suffered a major setback.

Prison Conditions and Political Confrontation

PTI founder Imran Khan is imprisoned in connection with several cases. PTI leadership and lawyers have periodically expressed concerns and claimed that the former prime minister is being kept in solitary confinement, is being mistreated, and is being deprived of basic medical facilities.

However, the Government of Pakistan has consistently rejected all these allegations as baseless. Its position has been that, in accordance with prison rules and regulations, all necessary and even additional facilities are being provided to Imran Khan.

Defeat of the Narrative on the International Front

The position reflected in international media coverage makes clear that there is a significant difference between Pakistan’s domestic politics and international journalistic standards. PTI’s objective was to gain the sympathy of the international community and mobilize human rights organizations, but reporting by independent international organizations has reduced the effectiveness of this approach.

In journalism, evidence and independent observation are fundamentally important for verifying any claim. Rather than relying on emotional statements and political allegations, international media have prioritized facts, strengthening the government’s position at the international level.

This situation indicates that a narrative created for political purposes cannot gain international acceptance unless it is accompanied by undeniable evidence.

Following this reporting, it has become a major challenge for PTI to regain support for its position among international journalistic circles.

According to a 21 August report by international news agencies Associated Press and The Canadian Press, the Pakistani government rejected as baseless allegations by Imran Khan’s family and party of “abuse, mental torture, punitive solitary confinement and medical negligence.”

The Ministry of Information maintained that Imran Khan is in prison as a convicted prisoner as a result of court decisions, and that the allegations against him are not supported by prison and medical records.

According to the report, the government says Imran Khan is not being held in solitary confinement and has had opportunities to communicate with his family members, lawyers and doctors.

The government also claimed that more than 900 meetings have taken place during Imran Khan’s time in prison, while he has also been provided with home-cooked food, exercise and other facilities.

Government and PTI Face Off Over Medical Issue

Imran Khan’s health has become the most sensitive aspect of this dispute. Earlier this year, concerns emerged regarding the vision in his right eye. Imran Khan’s family and party claimed that his eyesight had significantly deteriorated, while authorities later maintained, based on medical examinations, that his condition had improved.

The recent court proceedings took place against this backdrop. On August 18, the Supreme Court ordered that Imran Khan be transferred to a private hospital in Islamabad for a medical examination and that his personal physician also be included in the medical board along with specialist doctors. The court also directed that his family be allowed weekly meetings and that he be permitted to communicate with his sons by telephone.

Later, the government filed a review petition against the order to transfer him to a private hospital. The government argued that there should be no discriminatory treatment regarding medical facilities for prisoners and that allowing treatment at a private hospital could open the way for similar demands from other prisoners.

Transfer to Government Hospital Instead of Shifa

On August 20, Imran Khan was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead of a private hospital. The government described the decision as security-related rather than political.

According to the government’s explanation, security conditions and concerns about a possible crowd were taken into consideration when Imran Khan was transferred to the hospital. After a medical examination, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail. Government officials said doctors declared him medically fit.

This was the stage at which PTI rejected the government’s position, accused it of violating the Supreme Court’s order, and announced contempt-of-court proceedings.

According to Reuters, PTI decided to file a contempt petition against the government, while the party’s position is that Imran Khan should have been transferred to a private hospital in accordance with the court’s order.
