Wasim Akram’s iconic 1992 WC performance

South African star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has described Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram’s memorable bowling spell in the 1992 World Cup final as one of the most inspiring memories of his cricket career, saying he can never forget that performance.

Speaking at an event related to the 2027 ICC World Cup in Johannesburg, Kagiso Rabada said Wasim Akram’s bowling against England in the 1992 World Cup final had always inspired him and that he too wanted to produce similarly memorable performances in the future.

The 2027 World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Speaking about playing the tournament on home soil in South Africa, Rabada said playing a World Cup in his own country would be a different experience, but he viewed it as an opportunity for freedom rather than pressure.

Rabada said he did not feel any additional pressure to win because of playing at home. Instead, he viewed the opportunity as representing his country and defending his home ground.

“We are at home and we are going to defend our fortress. That is what it means to me,” he said.

Speaking about his favourite memory from the 1992 World Cup final, Rabada said Wasim Akram’s spell against England would always remain memorable to him as a fast bowler.

He said it was a World Cup moment from the past that he would never forget because he was a bowler himself, adding that the passion and skill with which Wasim Akram played a key role in helping Pakistan win the match were admirable.

The South African star fast bowler said Wasim Akram tore through England’s batting lineup and helped his team secure victory, proving through his performance how passionate and talented a bowler he was.

Rabada also praised Wasim Akram’s pace, skill and presence on the field.
