US Iran Switzerland Talks

Web Desk: U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Saturday ahead of a highly anticipated first round of direct talks with Iranian officials at the Burgenstock resort, aiming to broker critical breakthroughs on regional conflicts.

Before departing from Washington for the two-day visit, Vance expressed cautious optimism regarding the diplomatic mission. He told reporters that the American delegation hopes to achieve tangible progress on both the Iranian nuclear issue and a potential ceasefire in Lebanon, identifying these two crises as the core focus of the upcoming sessions.

White House representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived early Saturday morning to set the stage for the high-level engagement.

Shortly after, the Iranian delegation arrived under the leadership of Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. To facilitate the dialogue, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s top military leadership, alongside the Prime Minister of Qatar, have also converged on Switzerland to serve as mediators.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Rafael Grossi will also participate in the discussions to oversee the nuclear dimension of the talks.

According to Vance, the initial meetings will span a few days to finalize the structural framework and official procedures for the negotiation process. While Vance plans to stay for up to two days, technical experts will remain in Switzerland to continue detailed discussions after the leadership concludes the initial round.

According to Axios, Washington is pushing a specific sequence for the diplomatic breakthrough. The U.S. wants Iran to wrap up this first round by inviting United Nations inspectors to visit Iranian nuclear sites that previously faced military threats from the US and Israel.

Inspectors last visited these facilities in June 2025 before the outbreak of recent hostilities. In exchange, sources indicate that the U.S. is willing to grant Iran access to a portion of its frozen assets, starting with a $6 billion fund currently held in Qatar, which Tehran can use exclusively for humanitarian purchases.

Meanwhile, the volatile situation in the Middle East continues to shadow the diplomatic efforts. Both Israel and Hezbollah recommitted to a ceasefire on Saturday, though previous truces have rapidly deteriorated, including one on Friday that shattered within hours.

Vance acknowledged that the ongoing violence in Lebanon could complicate the negotiation process, but noted that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is actively leading diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry confirmed that these talks represent the first official high-level meeting following the signing of the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Pakistani officials emphasized that Islamabad has maintained a balanced and constructive role throughout the crisis, having previously hosted the initial secret rounds of talks that paved the way for this Swiss summit.

Prime Minister Sharif is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the American, Iranian, Qatari and Swiss delegations to reinforce Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable regional peace.
