A significant development has emerged in efforts to achieve a permanent end to the war between the United States and Iran and establish lasting peace in the region. Representatives of both countries have departed for Switzerland to participate in key negotiations, while Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has arrived in Tehran on an important visit.
Mohsin Naqvi is currently in Tehran, where he met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Earlier, he paid respects at the shrine of Imam Ali Reza in Mashhad, where he was received by the Governor of Khorasan.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Mohsin Naqvi will also meet senior Iranian government officials and leaders to help resolve issues facing the next phase of negotiations through mutual consultations.
The memorandum of understanding agreed between the United States and Iran included a ceasefire provision related to Lebanon. However, Iran had raised objections following continued Israeli attacks.
According to the latest developments on Saturday, representatives of Iran and the United States have already departed for Switzerland for negotiations.
It is worth recalling that the United States and Iran signed a 14-point interim agreement on Thursday aimed at halting hostilities on all fronts and reaching a durable final agreement within 60 days on Iran’s nuclear programme and other complex issues.
Meanwhile, due to escalating tensions between Israel and an Iran-backed armed group in Lebanon, the US Vice President had cancelled a planned visit to Switzerland. However, following the ceasefire, other senior members of the American delegation are now heading to Switzerland, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to depart on Saturday.
The ceasefire in Lebanon was made possible through the efforts of American and Qatari negotiators, with support from Iran, according to military and official sources on both sides.
Israeli officials have stated that they will refrain from attacks as long as the other side does the same, although Israeli forces will remain in occupied areas of southern Lebanon.
It is notable that Israel launched several airstrikes on Lebanon within the first hour of the ceasefire. US intelligence officials have reportedly briefed President Donald Trump that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is dissatisfied with the agreement reached with Iran and may attempt to derail the process.
