Medical experts explain difference between heart attack and heart failure

Heart diseases

Heart diseases are becoming increasingly common in Pakistan and around the world, and the issue is no longer limited to the elderly. According to medical experts, there has been a clear rise in cases of heart diseases among people aged 30 to 45, while women are also at greater risk than before.

Experts say that changing lifestyles, continuous mental stress, unhealthy eating habits, and hormonal changes are increasing the risk of heart disease in women. The worrying aspect is that symptoms of heart disease in women are often different from men, due to which many women ignore them, considering them to be normal fatigue or physical weakness.

Medical experts explain that heart attack and heart failure are not the same diseases, although people commonly confuse them. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked due to narrowing or blockage of arteries, which reduces oxygen supply to the heart muscle and causes damage to heart tissue.

In contrast, heart failure is a condition in which the heart gradually weakens and loses its ability to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. It is usually a long-term condition that worsens over time; however, with proper treatment and precautions, patients can still live a normal life. Experts also warn that severe heart attacks can later lead to heart failure.

Symptoms of a heart attack in women are not always obvious. Signs such as pressure, tightness, heaviness, or pain in the chest may appear for a few minutes and then go away. Pain in the neck, jaw, shoulders, arms, back, or abdomen can also be a warning sign.

Medical experts also say that shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, weakness, and anxiety should not be ignored. Some women may feel severe pressure or tightness in the upper back during a heart attack, as if the body is being tightly bound.

Health experts emphasize that most heart diseases can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. Regular heart check-ups, complete avoidance of smoking, a balanced diet, and daily exercise are very important in this regard.

According to the American Heart Association, at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week helps maintain heart health. Diet should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, nuts, and healthy proteins, while processed foods, excess salt, and added sugar should be avoided.

Experts advise that women should not ignore early symptoms related to the heart and seek immediate medical attention in case of any unusual condition, as timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent serious complications.
