BCCI concern over girlfriend culture in IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has reportedly grown concerned about what it describes as a “girlfriend culture” in the Indian Premier League and is preparing to introduce new rules on the matter.

According to Indian media reports, the board fears that the activities of cricketers’ girlfriends are affecting the image of both the league and the board. As a result, it is considering restricting the movement of players’ partners.

Reports suggest that during the IPL, some players’ girlfriends travel with the team, ride on team buses, and stay in team hotels—something that has drawn strong displeasure from the board.

Media reports also mention that several cricketers, including Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, and Arshdeep Singh, are often seen with their partners. Some of these partners are also social media influencers who promote various apps.

Sources claim that in the past, such matters have even escalated to police complaints, while delays in team movements have also been reported—prompting the board to take the issue seriously.

BCCI officials have reportedly informed the Anti-Corruption Unit as well, and formal regulations may be introduced in an upcoming meeting. These rules could apply not only to the IPL but also to the Indian national team.

Experts believe that if implemented, these rules could help establish a clearer boundary between players’ personal lives and professional responsibilities. However, mixed reactions from players and fans are expected.

Supporters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India believe that such interactions are liable to damage the repute of IPL and has gone out of the control of the BCCI. They believe that such distractions have caused widespread distress among cricket fans.
