Web Desk: Workers and labour organisations across Pakistan joined global commemorations on Thursday to mark Labour Day, honoring the sacrifices of workers who laid down their lives for labor rights in the United States in the late 19th century.

The annual observance pays tribute to the workers of Chicago who, on May 1, 1886, launched a movement demanding fair working conditions, including the eight-hour workday. Their protests later turned deadly, leaving a lasting legacy that shaped labor movements worldwide.

Across Pakistan, political parties, trade unions and civil society groups organised rallies, seminars and public gatherings to mark the day. Organisers said the events aim to highlight ongoing labor issues and reinforce calls for workers’ rights.

Meanwhile, speakers at these gatherings are expected to pay tribute to the Chicago workers and renew commitments to protecting labor rights, fair wages and safe working conditions.

The origins of Labour Day trace back to the protests in Chicago, where workers took to the streets against exploitation by industrialists and employers. However, the demonstrations were met with force as police opened fire on crowds, killing and injuring hundreds.

In the aftermath, several labor leaders were arrested, and dozens were later executed for raising their voices in support of workers’ rights, further galvanizing the global labor movement.

Today, Labour Day is observed in many countries as a symbol of solidarity and a reminder of the struggles that led to key labor protections. In Pakistan and elsewhere, the day serves both as a commemoration and a platform to address contemporary challenges faced by workers.

As events unfold, labor leaders say the focus remains on translating the spirit of the movement into tangible improvements for workers, amid evolving economic and social pressures.
