Two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that were loitering adjecent to Rawalpindi located and were shot down by air defence systems, senior Pakistani officials confirmed.
According to security sources, the drones were detected flying at low altitude in the vicinity of Faizabad, a sensitive area connecting the two cities.
Air defence units responded immediately and successfully intercepted and destroyed both UAVs to avert any potential threat.
Following the incident, authorities temporarily closed the airspace over Islamabad as a precautionary measure and are operational again.
Security agencies have launched an investigation to determine the origin and purpose of the drones, while security has been heightened in parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
