Karachi hosts first major squash event in 20 years

Karachi: A top-level squash event is being hosted by Pakistan after two decades. Karachi Open, the PSA World Tour Gold Event will take place from January 6 to January 11 in Karachi. It will feature some of the biggest names in International squash.

The total prize of the tournament is $243,000. It will be divided into $121,500 allocated for each of the men’s and women’s competition.

This event will be participated by 5 of the world’s top 10 players. The current World No. 5 Karim Gawad of Egypt who also happens to be former World Champion will be participating. Marwan El Shorbagy, The world’s no 5 will also be participating and world’s no 6 Youssef Ibrahim will also be present.

World No. 9, 10 and 11 will also be competing. Their names are Mohamed ElShorbagy, Youssef Soliman, Mohamed Zakaria.

Noor Zaman, Tayyab Aslam, Nasir Iqbal and Ashab Irfan will be the Pakistani players participating in the event.

Karachi Open will be Pakistan’s most expensive squash tournament in 23 years. It will run from January 6 to 11.

The 2003 World Open in Lahore, was the last event with a similar profile. It carried a prize money of $175,000.


The World Under-23 Squash Championship, earlier this year, in April was also hosted by Karachi. It had a fund of $60,000.
