NADRA refuses CNIC to a woman with 10 month age gap with sister

ISLAMABAD: A woman has moved court against National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) after officials refused to make her Computerised National Identification Card (CNIC) because of a 10-month age difference between her and her younger sister.

Petitioner Saba Adnan, through Advocate Usman Farooq, told the court she has been visiting NADRA for the past 11 years and they have refused to make her CNIC and instead mock her because of a 10-month age difference between her and her younger sister.

Through her lawyer, she stated that her parents and sisters already have their identity cards. Even her younger sister has received hers.

But she is repeatedly asked why there is only a 10-month age gap between the two sisters.

Advocate Usman Farooq said that under NADRA rules, a CNIC can be issued even if there is a seven-month age difference.

NADRA MAKES AMENDMENTS TO CNIC RULES

NADRA has made amendments to the CNIC rules under which the Family Registration Certificate (FRC) has now been given legal cover under the new reforms. Applicants will submit an undertaking to confirm that all shared information is correct. Citizens will receive the FRC only on the basis of NADRA’s own records.

The revised system defines three family categories: Alpha (by birth), Beta (by marriage), and Gamma (by adoption). People must register any family member who is not listed. They can correct details through the mobile app or at NADRA centres, and wrong entries can be removed. The updated FRC will also carry complete information of men with multiple marriages, a step aimed at ending confusion in family data.

Under the new rules, married women can choose whether they want their father’s name or their husband’s name displayed on their CNIC.

To address past issues related to verification, confiscation, and cancellation of documents, NADRA has also introduced several new measures to make the process easier for citizens.
