Lawyers nationwide stage court boycott

Following yesterday’s suicide bombing in Islamabad’s district court area, bar associations across the country have continued their boycott of judicial proceedings and strikes today.

In Islamabad, the District Judicial Complex remains completely closed, with the bar advising lawyers, clerks, and litigants not to attend court. Officials of the District Bar have instructed lawyers to stay at home today.

The District Bar had announced three days of mourning and a one-day strike in response to the attack, while the Islamabad Bar Council also declared a three-day strike to express grief over the tragic incident.

Similarly, the District Bar Association of Rawalpindi has upheld the strike in the district courts, with lawyers boycotting courts in protest and mourning. According to bar officials, lawyers will only attend to emergency cases; otherwise, all courts remain on strike, leading to the postponement of pending hearings.

Across Punjab, including the provincial capital Lahore, lawyers in subordinate courts have also continued their strike. Earlier, the Punjab Bar Council had announced a full strike to express solidarity within the legal community, respect for the judiciary, and commitment against terrorism.

In Peshawar, the High Court Bar Association strongly condemned the Islamabad bombing and declared a boycott of court proceedings today.

In Balochistan, the Bar Council announced a province-wide boycott of judicial proceedings in protest against the Islamabad attack. Black flags were hoisted in bar rooms of the Balochistan High Court and subordinate courts, and pending cases were deferred due to lawyers’ absence. The council stated that the government has completely failed to provide security for life and property, and the boycott was declared in solidarity with Islamabad’s lawyers. Meanwhile, strict security arrangements have been implemented in the Red Zone of the federal capital following yesterday’s suicide attack, with the High Court and surrounding areas placed on high alert.
