Supermarket blast in Mexico claims 23 lives, including children

MEXICO CITY: At least 23 people were killed and 11 others injured in an explosion at a supermarket in northern Mexico’s Sonora state on Saturday. Local officials said the blast, which tore through a Waldo’s store in central Hermosillo, appeared to be an accident possibly caused by a faulty electric transformer.

Officials Confirm Casualties and Launch Investigation

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed in a video statement that several of the victims were minors. He added that those injured were being treated at hospitals in Hermosillo. “I have ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and identify any accountability,” Durazo said.

According to the state prosecutor’s office, initial findings suggest the blast was accidental, with investigators focusing on a transformer located inside the store. Officials said the exact cause would be confirmed once firefighters allowed access to the site.

Swift Emergency Response

Governor Durazo praised rescue teams for their prompt action, saying, “No one will face this tragedy alone. From the very first moments, emergency, security, and health services responded with professionalism and dedication, saving many lives.”

National Mourning and Presidential Support

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences on social media, offering sympathy to the victims’ families. She said she had spoken to Governor Durazo and instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez to send a federal support team to assist the injured and their families.

Eyewitness Accounts and Aftermath

Local media reported that some shoppers sought refuge inside the supermarket after the blast but became trapped as the flames spread. Photographs showed the store’s blackened facade and shattered windows. Newspaper El Universal reported the explosion occurred around 2 p.m. local time, prompting nearby shops to close to prevent the fire from spreading.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from the affected area and cancelled Day of the Dead celebrations planned nearby as emergency operations continue.
