Monsoon intensifies into deep depression in Sindh

deep depression Sindh

A powerful monsoon system over Sindh has intensified into a deep depression, marking an unprecedented event for September, according to the Meteorological Department.

This weather system is expected to bring intermittent rainfall across the province, including Karachi, prompting heightened alertness among residents and authorities.

Deep depression anchored over Tharparkar

Centered over Tharparkar, this deep depression is one stage shy of becoming a cyclonic storm. With winds potentially reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, the system is poised to deliver heavy downpours across multiple districts.

A nationwide rain alert has been issued for the next 12 to 24 hours. Meteorologists attribute this unusual intensity to shifting weather patterns driven by climate change.

While September 2011 holds the record as Sindh’s wettest month, the current system stands out for its timing and strength.

Although it is expected to weaken slightly within the next 24 hours, reverting to a depression, strong showers may persist as rain bands move across the region.

Karachi prepares for torrential rain and potential flooding

Karachi is bracing for intermittent rainfall from today through September 10, with the core of the system expected to pass near the city tomorrow, increasing the likelihood of torrential bursts.

Rainfall totals could exceed 100 millimeters during this period. The city’s inadequate drainage systems and damaged road infrastructure heighten the risk of waterlogging, particularly in underpasses and low-lying streets, which may flood rapidly.

High-Risk Areas and Safety Precautions Across Sindh

Several districts, including Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Sanghar, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Sukkur, and Larkana, face elevated risks from this weather event.

Strong winds pose a threat to unstable structures, such as weak hoardings and light poles, which could collapse.

Residents are urged to take proactive measures: clear roof drains, secure valuables on higher shelves, and park vehicles on elevated ground.
