White House Shooting: Suspect Identified as Afghan National

Law enforcement sources said the gunman who shot two National Guard troops near the White House on Wednesday has been identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal. He came to the US during the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal.

According to officials, Lakanwal was waiting near the Farragut West Metro Station in Northwest DC around 2:15 p.m. when he opened fire, hitting a female guard in the chest and then in the head.

Washington Police said a suspect has been taken into custody after the shooting of National Guard members in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

According to two law enforcement officials, two Guard soldiers were shot near the White House. Their conditions are not yet known. The officials spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak publicly.

Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene, and a helicopter landed on the National Mall.

The Joint DC Task Force confirmed that they were responding to an incident near the White House after reports of gunfire. However, the spokesperson did not confirm whether any National Guard members were shot.
