What’s behind the striking scene at Iran’s Hormuz Island?

Iran’s Hormuz Island

Web Desk: A striking natural spectacle unfolded along the shores of Iran’s Hormuz Island this week when seawater along the coastline suddenly turned deep red, drawing attention from residents, visitors and social media viewers alike.

According to experts, the unusual coloration occurred after iron oxide–rich soil from the island was swept into the sea, altering the appearance of the surrounding waters.

Rainfall triggers dramatic shift

Heavy rainfall on December 16 in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province caused large volumes of the island’s distinctive red soil to flow toward the coast. As a result, the mineral-laden sediment spread across the shoreline and into nearby waters, creating a vivid crimson hue.

Scientists say Hormuz Island is known for its high concentration of iron oxide, a naturally occurring compound that gives the soil its red color. When carried into the sea, the material temporarily transforms the water’s appearance without posing a known environmental threat.

Experts monitor conditions

Authorities and environmental experts said they are monitoring the situation, noting that such events, while rare, can occur in regions with unique geological features during periods of intense rainfall.

For now, the dramatic scene has captivated onlookers, offering a reminder of the powerful interaction between weather and geology in shaping natural landscapes.
