U.S. President Donald Trump said the gunman involved in the shooting had multiple weapons, adding that attacks on Republicans are not unprecedented and stressing the need to bridge political divisions.

Speaking at a press conference after the shooting during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Trump said he does not believe the incident is connected to any conflict with Iran, describing the attacker as a lone individual.

He said one security officer was shot but remained safe due to wearing a bulletproof jacket, adding that he had personally spoken to the injured officer.

The president emphasized that such incidents would not stop official events. “We will not cancel our events. We will hold an even bigger gathering within 30 days,” he said.

Trump noted that although they wanted to continue the ceremony, they left the venue in line with security protocol.

Describing the moment, he said it was “very shocking,” recalling loud crashing sounds as trays fell. “I was trying to see what happened when Melania immediately said it was a bad sound. Secret Service agents acted promptly,” he added.

He further stated that individuals who make a significant impact often face such incidents. “We have taken major steps. This country used to be mocked; we have changed that. We improved conditions, and many people don’t like it,” he said.

According to Trump, the suspect attempted the attack from about 15 yards away and has been taken into custody. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is reportedly a resident of California.

He added that the suspect resisted arrest and was wearing a bulletproof vest while carrying multiple weapons.

Trump also referenced a previous shooting incident involving him in Pennsylvania.
