Torkham Crossing is set to re-open after nine days of closure

PESHAWAR: Torkham crossing, the main transit point between Pakistan and Afghanistan, is set to reopen after a nine day closure in the next 24-48 hours.

The development comes a day after Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire in Doha.

Customs officials stated that they are making preparations have delivered scanners to the Torkham Terminal for clearing cargo vehicles, and have instructed all staff to attend their designated duties

Dozens of cargo trucks laden with fruits, vegetables and other eatables have been stopped on the Afghan side of the border. The traders seem happy at the re opening saying that the halt in trade resulted in significant monetary losses for them.

Talks have concluded between Pakistan and Afghan Delegations yesterday, both sides agreeing on maintaining strong and constructive relations, neither country would take any hostile actions against the other.

The official statement said: “Both sides are committed to resolving issues and disputes through dialogue”, detailing that “a comprehensive and meaningful ceasefire has been mutually agreed upon.”

“In the future, a mechanism will be established, under the mediation of intermediary countries, to review bilateral claims and ensure the effective implementation of this agreement,” it said.
