Tirah Jirga highlights govt mismanagement, launch peace movement

⏱ 3 minute read

Web Desk: An important jirga convened by the Baara Political Alliance to address the situation in the Tirah Valley concluded, with participants sharply criticizing what they described as provincial government mismanagement and announcing the launch of a peace movement.

The jirga was held in Baara at the request of tribal elders and representatives from Tirah, who sought to determine a future course of action amid deteriorating conditions in the area.

During the jirga, speakers strongly criticized the provincial government over administrative failures in Tirah. Members accused authorities of corruption and political interference in the distribution of 4 billion rupees allocated for affected families.

Participants said mismanagement had deepened the suffering of displaced residents and undermined trust in official relief efforts.

At the same time, jirga members paid tribute to security forces for their role in maintaining peace under difficult conditions.

Former chairman of the Baara Political Alliance, Haji Shireen Afridi, presented the agenda of what was described as a national-level jirga.

Afridi said the alliance had twice held jirgas with militants before transferring responsibility to the provincial government and Tirah elders, but said both efforts failed to produce results.

“The problems of the affected people of Tirah are not limited to a single area or tribe. This is a collective national issue that cannot tolerate further delay,” the alliance said in a statement.

The Baara Political Alliance announced full solidarity, sympathy and support for all families displaced from Tirah, vowing to stand with them on every forum until their rights are secured.

The jirga demanded immediate implementation of a joint declaration agreed during the meeting.

The alliance called for the immediate restoration of complete peace in the Tirah Valley, along with clear guarantees for lasting stability.

It demanded an end to firing, shelling, mortar attacks on homes and the downing of quadcopters, saying such actions were spreading fear among civilians.

The jirga also called for the dignified return of displaced families and for all promises and agreements made with them to be formally recognized and implemented.

Participants demanded impartial investigations into alleged political interference, nepotism, administrative incompetence and corruption in the registration of Tirah’s displaced people, calling for action against those responsible.

The alliance urged authorities to grant internally displaced persons (IDP) status to all residents who own homes or property in Tirah and to ensure their full registration and inclusion in relief packages.

It also warned that the law-and-order situation in Upper Baara and the Baara plain area had become alarming and required urgent control measures.

Meanwhile, the Baara Political Alliance announced the launch of a peace movement from Sunday, aimed at providing a safe environment for residents.

The alliance called on the provincial government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to protect citizens and curb kidnappings for ransom, threatening calls and intimidation allegedly carried out by militants.

Reaffirming its commitment, the alliance said it would continue its struggle alongside the affected people of Tirah until their demands are met and their rights secured.
