The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has achieved another historic milestone in Pakistan’s Human Spaceflight Program, which is being described as an exceptional achievement in the country’s scientific progress and space research.


According to a reoprt issued by SUPARCO, the second phase of astronaut candidate selection. In the initial phase, comprehensive screening of candidates from across Pakistan was conducted, after which two outstanding candidates were shortlisted.


The shortlisted candidates successfully completed detailed medical, psychological, and professional aptitude evaluations in accordance with international human spaceflight standards at the China Astronauts Center (ACC). These assessments were carried out under the latest global protocols and included in-depth evaluation of physical endurance, decision-making under mental stress, teamwork, and technical skills.


The report further said that both candidates will participate in a six-month advanced astronaut training program at the China Astronauts Center.

During the training, candidates will receive practical instruction in a zero-gravity environment, space station operations, emergency procedures, and scientific experiments. After completion of the training, one candidate will be finally selected for a proposed space mission to the Chinese Space Station, expected in October or November 2026.


This development is the result of growing space cooperation between Pakistan and China, which is ongoing under a bilateral astronaut cooperation agreement signed in February 2025. The agreement was finalized under the leadership of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, whose vision, leadership, and diplomatic efforts enabled Pakistan’s inclusion in the global human spaceflight program.


This historic step also reflects the strong support of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, which selected Pakistan as the first foreign partner in its astronaut program. Experts believe this decision is practical evidence of increasing global trust in Pakistan and the strong strategic partnership between the two countries.


Science and technology experts say that this program will not only promote Pakistan’s space research but will also inspire the younger generation to pursue careers in scientific fields. This achievement will place Pakistan on a path toward a more active role in advanced space research and international scientific missions in the future.
