Delhi police crackdown on students

Indian Punjabi and Hindi film actress Sonam Bajwa has spoken out against the Delhi Police’s baton charge on student protesters, saying the incident “truly broke my heart.”

The Delhi Police claimed that protesters participating in the Cockroach Janta Party’s march toward Parliament became uncontrollable and displayed aggressive behavior that could have turned violent.

It is worth noting that police used baton charges and tear gas on Monday to disperse the demonstrators.

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party accused the police of using excessive force, alleging that security personnel also attacked the truck carrying the party’s founder Abhijeet Dupke, social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali Jey Angmo, Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi, and actor Prakash Raj.

Around 50,000 protesters took to the streets on Monday, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The CJP, which had been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar for the past month, had called for a march to Parliament, drawing thousands of participants.

Following the police action, Sonam Bajwa joined several prominent public figures in condemning the incident.

The 36-year-old actress shared a statement on her Instagram account on Tuesday, writing:

“These are the voices of our country’s youth, not a threat. Why are batons being used against them instead of listening to them? This is not about politics; it is about choosing compassion over force. They deserve to be heard, not hurt.”

In the caption of her post, Sonam Bajwa added:

“Watching yesterday’s scenes truly broke my heart. This isn’t about taking sides—it’s about standing with humanity.”
