A Saudi woman has donated her 80 per cent of liver to her husband’s second wife.
According to a Saudi media outlet, the second wife was suffering from a severe health problem for years.
Despite getting treatment from abroad, she did not recover, thats when the first wife decided to step forward.
This act is a strong example of selflessness by this Saudi woman.
The husband talked to the local media, and acccording to him, he decided to donate his organ but the first wife announced she would donate 80 per cent of her liver, purely for the sake of God.
Medical tests confirmed tissue compatibility, and the transplant surgery was successful.
Risks associated with Liver donation
Liver donors do not typically experience any serious long-term complications, in part because the liver is unique among the body’s organs in its ability to regenerate. After giving part of one’s liver, it will eventually return to close to its original size.
However, the surgery is long as it lasts approximately four-six hours. At the end, the person get closed with internal sutures and externally with steri strips, tape, or glue. In rare instances staples will be required.
Even though liver donation is considered a very safe operation, it involves major surgery and is associated with complications, which may include:
- Possible allergic reaction to anesthesia
- Pain and discomfort
- Nausea
- Wound infection
- Bleeding that may require transfusion
- Blood clots
- Pneumonia
- Bile leakage, bile duct problems
- Hernia
- Scar tissue formation
In rare instances liver failure, which may require transplantation, and death may occur.
