The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Belgian scientist Francis Halzen. Francis Halzen discovered high-energy neutrinos coming from space through the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
Praising the scientist’s work, the Nobel Committee said he had made significant contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos in astrophysics. According to the Royal Swedish Academy, this research could reveal secrets of the universe that remain hidden.
Earlier, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was jointly awarded to two German scientists and an American scientist for their significant contributions to the field of neurology.
It may be recalled that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced on October 7, while the Nobel Prize in Literature will be announced on October 8. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, while the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on October 12.
It should be noted that the Nobel Prize is the name given to a series of awards presented in fields including chemistry, physics, medicine, literature and peace. The prizes are awarded to people who, during the preceding year, have “conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
The awards were established by Swedish businessman Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite. He allocated almost all of his assets to a fund to finance the prizes. The Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the person who has done the most or the best work for promoting fellowship among nations, abolishing or reducing standing armies, and establishing and promoting peace.
