MIRPUR: The banned Awami Action Committee’s claims of remaining peaceful have once again come under scrutiny. According to Mirpur Police, during a routine checkpoint operation, two motorcyclists, identified as Naeem and Aqib, were arrested while traveling from Dadyal to Rawalakot after having returned from the Rawalakot sit-in.

According to preliminary investigations, the arrested individuals revealed that they were acting on the instructions of Khawaja Mehran, Sardar Aman and Nazim Kashmiri.

Police said the suspects were transporting weapons from Dadyal to Rawalakot at their direction. Authorities recovered two Kalashnikov rifles, three pistols and a large quantity of ammunition from their possession. The suspects reportedly stated that they had been actively involved in the activities of the banned Awami Action Committee and were moving the weapons to Rawalakot.

Sources further claimed that during interrogation, the suspects made important disclosures regarding the internal situation at the sit-in. They alleged that conditions there were highly tense and that some individuals were being held against their will.

The report also claims that an approximately 18-year-old resident of Mirpur was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse by Nazim Kashmiri and several of his associates, and is allegedly being prevented from returning home to stop him from making any statements about the incident.

The developments have once again raised questions about the elements operating within a movement launched in the name of public rights and about their actual objectives.

Authorities have urged the public to stay away from disruptive elements and groups taking the law into their own hands. While securing fundamental rights and raising one’s voice for them is a democratic right, officials stressed that incitement against state institutions, violence or any unlawful activities cannot be supported under any circumstances. The current situation, they said, requires the public to assess the facts impartially and remain cautious of any agenda that may create unrest in society under the guise of advocating basic rights.
