On August 20, 2025, Pakistan marked the 54th Shahadat anniversary of Rashid Minhas, the Pakistan Air Force pilot awarded the Nishan-e-Haider.

Coupled with solemn tributes highlighting duty, courage, and national service.

Rashid Minhas, a brave son of soil

Minhas graduated from the Pakistan Air Force Academy, Risalpur, as part of the 51st GDP course.

He moved to No. 2 Squadron at PAF Base Masroor, Karachi, for jet conversion training on T-33 trainers.

On August 20, 1971, during a second solo on the T-33A, a Bengali instructor, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman deceitfully entered the aircraft before take-off.

After departure, Rahman turned the jet toward India, prompting a hijack call to Masroor.

Controllers asked for confirmation, which Minhas provided.

A struggle for control followed through the mechanically linked flight controls.

The aircraft crashed near Sujawal, roughly 51 kilometres from the Indian border, killing Matiur and Mihas embraced Shahdat.

The official citation records that Minhas “forced the aircraft to crash” to prevent the defection of the jet.

Investigators later described impact evidence consistent with a low-altitude loss of control, noting the canopy’s separation and Rahman’s body found away from the wreckage.

He remains the only Pakistan Air Force officer to receive the Nishan-e-Haider, and the youngest and shortest serving recipient of the decoration.

Roads, bases, and classrooms continue to carry his story forward for new generations.

For many Pakistanis, Rashid Minhas represents an unflinching choice to protect national assets at any cost.

Educators and veterans use the episode to teach judgment under pressure, cockpit discipline, and the chain of command.

The message this year is steady that honour the sacrifice, learn the lessons, and strengthen systems.

After Pakistan unparalleled air superiority against India in recent Pak-India clash exacerbate this year’s Shahdat anniversary of Pakistan’s fighter pilot.
