Students will need to pay a Rs14,000 down payment to receive an e-bike.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has decided to relaunch the interest-free e-bike scheme for students, under which 100,000 electric bikes will be distributed over the next year.
According to the Punjab government, each e-bike will receive a Rs70,000 subsidy. Students will be required to make a Rs14,000 down payment, followed by interest-free monthly installments of Rs2,100.
Maryam Nawaz also announced that the Punjab government will cover the down payment and registration fee for female students. They will only have to pay the Rs2,100 monthly interest-free installment.
In addition, Punjab government employees will also be eligible to obtain e-bikes through easy installment plans.
The chief minister further directed officials to simultaneously introduce more electric buses, e-taxis, e-bikes, and electric three-wheelers. She said the government aims to deploy 5,000 electric buses across Punjab over the next five years to improve public transport services.
Students will get benefit from the scheme by gaining access to affordable and reliable transportation, making it convenient to commute to educational institutions while reducing travel costs. The initiative is also aimed at improving mobility for students who resort to public transport or travel long distances for their studies.
Besides, the promotion of electric bikes is part of broader efforts to promote smoke free transportation and reduce carbon emissions. As electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions, wider adoption of e-bikes can help reduce pollution triggered diseases in urban areas, lower fuel consumption, and support environmental sustainability.
It is also worth noting that e-bike scheme is among several initiatives launched by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The Punjab government states that these projects are intended to modernize the province’s transport system, promote clean energy, and provide affordable mobility options for students, employees, and the general public.
