Web desk: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif addressed the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, beginning his speech with a recitation from the Holy Quran.
The prime minister congratulated the President of the General Assembly on assuming the chair and lauded UN Secretary-General António Guterres for his “courageous leadership in difficult times.”
He said today’s world has become “more complex than ever before,” with conflicts intensifying, international laws being openly violated, and humanitarian crises worsening.
He warned that terrorism has become a grave threat to the world, while misleading propaganda and fake news have eroded trust.
Climate change, he said, remains a major challenge, posing an existential threat to humanity.
Outlining Pakistan’s approach, Shehbaz said the country’s foreign policy, guided by the vision of the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam, is based on peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, dialogue, and diplomacy.
The prime minister recalled that last year, from the same platform, he had warned that Pakistan would take decisive action against any aggression.
‘Those words proved true when, in May, Pakistan faced aggression on its eastern front,’ he said. ‘The arrogant enemy was humiliated.’
Shehbaz Sharif said India exploited the Pahalgam for political gain instead of cooperating in investigations.
He said India targeted civilian areas, killing innocent people, and violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and national security.
Under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, demonstrated unmatched courage, he said. He noted that under Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar’s command, Pakistan’s pilots showcased their skill and brought down seven Indian warplanes.
The prime minister paid tribute to the martyrs of Pakistan, saying their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
Shehbaz concluded by reaffirming that Pakistan remains committed to peace, dialogue, and diplomacy, but would always safeguard its sovereignty and defend its people with full strength.
