President of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, Malik Shahzad Awan, welcomed the federal government’s decision to reduce diesel and petrol prices and announced a reduction in goods transport fares.

Reacting to the government’s decision to lower petroleum prices, Malik Shahzad Awan said, “We announce a 6 percent reduction in goods transport fares.”

He said they were grateful to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for deciding to reduce diesel and petrol prices and expressed hope that petroleum prices would be reduced further.

He added that the reduction in petroleum prices provides relief not only to transporters but to every Pakistani. Due to war-like conditions, imports and exports in the country have declined drastically, resulting in very limited business activity.

Malik Shahzad Awan said that both the difficult conditions and rising petroleum prices had severely affected the transport sector. Because of the lack of work, transporters have parked thousands of vehicles.

He further stated that under the current circumstances, they hope the federal government will provide additional relief to goods transporters, adding that they are operating vehicles at a loss in the broader national interest.

The president of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance said they had requested relief from the federal government regarding withholding tax, toll tax, and what they described as unjustified fines issued by traffic and motorway police. He added that the government should provide facilities proportional to the taxes they pay.

He reiterated the demand for relief in toll tax, withholding tax, and fines imposed by motorway and traffic police.

Malik Shahzad Awan said that a reduction in the prices of daily-use goods for the public would be possible through lower petroleum prices and by keeping fuel prices under control.
