OTTAWA: Pakistani youth in Canada continue to make their mark across various fields through hard work and talent, and their growing presence in the world of entertainment is no exception.
A strong example of this rising influence is “Not in Vain,” a film created by Pakistani-origin filmmaker Ahsan Khan after three years of dedication. The movie is set to hit cinemas across Canada on 26 November.
With its unique theme, solid script, quality cinematography and emotionally engaging music, the film has already gained notable attention within the South Asian community even before its release. Its trailer has been widely appreciated by Pakistani, Indian and other community audiences.
According to producer and director Ahsan Khan, the film is more than just a project rather it represents continuous hard work, unity and a creative journey. According to him, he wanted to bring a story to the global screen that reflects the emotions of young people and the social realities around them.
Lead actor Ansar Rehman shared that his role in “Not in Vain” was emotionally challenging, but the team’s support and professional environment turned it into a memorable milestone in his career. The lead actor is confident that viewers will feel a strong connection with the film’s story and characters.
The film’s team expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community and hopes that after its 26 November release, “Not in Vain” will set a new example of Pakistani talent in Canadian cinema.
The film brings together a mix of rising talent and well-known performers. Anser Rahman takes the lead, guiding viewers through the protagonist’s emotional arc, while young actress Myra Chandani adds an important generational contrast to the narrative. Mike D. Smith plays a key role that introduces tension and delves into how tough choices can ripple through families and communities.
Early showings for a select group of journalists have prompted a range of reactions focused on the acting, visuals, and overall direction. These views are personal impressions from individual reviewers and should not be taken as official statements from the makers of the film. Among the comments shared so far: one critic remarked, “Rahman delivers one of the most emotionally honest performances — subtle, controlled, and real.”
Another reviewer noted, “Myra Chandani brings an emotional presence that adds depth to every scene she appears in.”
On the antagonist’s role, a critic wrote, “Mike D. Smith approaches the character with nuance and a restrained intensity.”
Commenting on the creative vision, one reviewer observed, “Ahsan Khan’s direction shows a clear sense of purpose and precision.”
The cinematography has also drawn attention, with one comment describing it as “visually intentional and structured in a way that supports the film’s emotional themes.”

The film’s visual style plays a crucial part in establishing its tone. It uses tight framing, softened color choices, and thoughtful, observational shots to mirror the protagonist’s changing emotional landscape. The imagery is paired with a soundtrack designed to complement the storytelling gently rather than dominate it, resulting in an experience that feels cohesive and immersive.
Not in Vain also weaves in subtle cultural elements tied to the South Asian diaspora in Canada. While these influences aren’t the central focus of the plot, they appear through themes of community expectations, family systems, and differing generational perspectives. These touches help frame the characters’ motivations and relationships.
