ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has secured re-election to the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the 2026–2028 term, according to the Foreign Office.
The elections took place during the 30th Session of the Conference of States Parties (CSP-30) held in The Hague from November 24 to 28, 2025.
The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), ratified by 193 States Parties, is regarded as the most successful disarmament treaty, having eliminated an entire category of weapons of mass destruction. The OPCW Executive Council serves as the main policy-making body of the Organisation, tasked with ensuring effective implementation and compliance with the Convention. It also promotes the scientific and economic development of member countries through the peaceful applications of chemistry.
Since ratifying the CWC in 1997, Pakistan has been an active member of the OPCW and has consistently served on its Executive Council. The country has played a constructive role in fulfilling the Convention’s objectives and regularly hosts OPCW inspections at its relevant facilities.
Pakistan’s re-election to the 41-member Executive Council underscores the Organisation’s recognition of its contributions. It reflects the confidence of member states in Pakistan’s ability to provide strong leadership and drive forward the work of the OPCW.
