Web Desk: Pakistan has urged the UN Security Council to take immediate and concrete measures to protect Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, warning that worsening conditions threaten to deepen an already severe humanitarian crisis.
Speaking at the United Nations, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation and called for international protection for the Palestinian population.
He said Israeli policies and actions were aimed at fragmenting Palestinian territory and entrenching what Pakistan considers an unlawful occupation.
Ahmad said the continued expansion of Israeli settlements was creating an increasingly dangerous situation in the occupied territory. He argued that settlement activity and related measures were undermining the territorial continuity of Palestinian areas and weakening prospects for a negotiated political settlement.
Pakistan also called for an immediate halt to violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians. Ahmad urged that those responsible for such attacks be held accountable under international law.
The Pakistani envoy also voiced concern over what he described as provocative actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.
He stressed the importance of respecting the sanctity of the site and warned that actions affecting Muslim holy places could further inflame tensions across the region.
At the same time, Ahmad called on the Security Council to ensure the implementation of recommendations aimed at safeguarding children, including measures advocated by UNICEF. He said Palestinian children must receive protection from continuing violence and insecurity.
The occupied West Bank has faced years of conflict, displacement, settlement expansion and violence. In recent months, tensions have remained high as Palestinian communities have reported increasing pressure on their land and property.
Pakistan said the international community must move beyond expressions of concern and take practical steps to uphold international law and protect civilians.
The country has consistently backed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and supports a political settlement based on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Pakistan said the Security Council and major international powers now face a critical test over whether they can translate diplomatic statements into meaningful action.
Ahmad urged the international community to protect Palestinian civilians, address settlement-related violence and support efforts toward a two-state solution.
Pakistan maintained that lasting peace in the Middle East would remain difficult to achieve unless the rights and security of Palestinians were protected and the underlying conflict was addressed through a credible political process.
