Lahore: Pakistan outplayed South Africa by a comfortable margin in the third Twenty20 International on Saturday, powered by captain Salman Ali Agha’s strategic leadership and Babar Azam’s composed half-century. The visitors successfully chased the target after restricting South Africa to a modest total.
Shaheen’s Early Strikes Put South Africa on Back Foot
Winning the toss, captain Salman Ali Agha opted to bowl first a decision that paid off immediately. Left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi struck twice in the opening over, dismissing both openers and setting the tone for Pakistan’s dominance. Spinner Usman Tariq, making his debut, complemented the pace attack with two key wickets in the middle overs.
South Africa struggled to build momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite brief resistance from Reeza Hendricks, who scored 34, and Corbin Bosch with 30, the Proteas could manage only 139 runs for nine wickets in their 20 overs. Shaheen led the bowling with three wickets, while Faheem Ashraf and Tariq claimed two apiece.
Babar Returns to Form
In reply, Pakistan’s top order provided a solid foundation. Babar Azam led the chase with a fluent 50 off 36 balls his first half-century in 13 T20 innings supported by Salman Ali Agha’s steady 33. The pair’s partnership ensured Pakistan’s control throughout the innings as the team crossed the target with wickets in hand.
New Faces and Team Changes
Pakistan made two changes to the playing XI, resting Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed, while bringing in Shaheen Afridi and debutant Usman Tariq. Shaheen presented Tariq with his debut cap before the match, as teammates offered their best wishes. South Africa also made three changes to their lineup in search of better balance.
Pakistan Eye Series Momentum
With this victory, Pakistan gained a morale boost ahead of the remaining fixtures. Team management praised the bowling unit’s discipline and Babar’s return to form. The side will now look to carry the winning momentum into upcoming matches as they continue preparations for next year’s ICC T20 World Cup.
