A renewed monsoon spell struck parts of Tharparkar and Hyderabad on Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall and widespread disruption.

Tharparkar recorded up to 105 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, with showers beginning Saturday evening across Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar.

By 6:20 pm on Sunday, rain reached Hyderabad, breaking a five-day stretch of oppressive heat and humidity.

While, authorities issued warnings of urban flooding and urged caution on waterlogged roads to ensure public safety.

Heavy rain across several districts of Sindh

In Tharparkar’s Islamkot taluka, approximately 65 millimetres of rain fell over nearly 20 hours, inundating town markets, hospital road, and nearby localities with standing water.

Similarly, in Mithi and Diplo, streets and lanes were submerged in ankle-to-knee-deep water, causing significant disruption. Floodwater even entered parts of the district civil hospital in Tharparkar, compounding challenges for staff and patients.

Urban flooding and damage reported in southern part of Sindh

The impact of the heavy rain was felt across districts, with Badin reporting the collapse of a katcha house during the downpour.

In low-lying neighbourhoods, poor drainage led to prolonged flooding, while municipal teams worked to clear choked lines and open channels.

Traffic crawled along submerged stretches, with diversions established around deeper pools to maintain safety.

Power supply issues and forecast

Widespread power outages followed the heavy rainfall, with the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) cutting supply to several feeders for safety reasons.

Hyderabad faced immediate shutdowns after the first burst of showers, though HESCO did not disclose the full extent of the interruptions.

The PMD forecasted more rain for Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Larkana, Tharparkar, Thatta, and other districts, heightening concerns about further disruption.

With further heavy spells expected, the risk of fresh flooding remains high as runoff could overwhelm already saturated areas.
