One of the attackers in the assassination former JUI MPA Maulana Muhammad Idrees and two injured police constables assigned has been identified.

According to investigators, one of the four attackers involved in the incident has been identified, and authorities say the terrorist is linked to Afghanistan. Officials added that efforts are underway to trace the entire network, while initial findings suggest the attack was planned in Afghanistan.

FIR registered in CTD Mardan

Earlier, an FIR regarding the killing of Maulana Idrees was registered at CTD Police Station Mardan on the complaint of Constable Sher Alam.

Police said that unknown suspects have been nominated in the FIR, and terrorism charges have also been included along with murder. At the time of the attack, Maulana Idrees was traveling in a vehicle along with two policemen and a driver.

According to the FIR, the attackers opened fire on the vehicle from behind, resulting in the death of Maulana Idrees and injuries to the two police constables.

The martyrdom of Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idrees is not the first such tragedy, as extremist elements have previously targeted religious scholars in similar attacks.

In earlier incidents, on July 21, 2025, prominent religious figure Pir Ibrahim was martyred in a firing incident within the jurisdiction of Tangi police station in Charsadda. On July 10, 2025, Awami National Party leader Maulana Khan Zeb was also killed in Bajaur’s Shindai Mor area.

Similarly, on March 14, 2025, a suicide attack on a mosque in South Waziristan left JUI district leader Maulana Abdullah Nadeem injured. On February 28, a mosque at Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora Khattak was targeted, resulting in the martyrdom of JUI leader Maulana Hamid-ul-Haq Haqqani.

Experts say that after failing to confront security forces directly, militant groups have increasingly shifted towards targeting soft targets, including unarmed civilians and religious scholars. They add that security institutions remain determined to thwart such attempts, describing repeated attacks on clerics as clear evidence of hostility toward both religion and humanity.
