The Story of the Gold Medalist Student Who Was Defrauded
According to the family, a consultant had demanded Rs7 million to send the student to the United States. In the hope of securing a better future for his daughter, her father sold his plot and paid Rs2.1 million. The mother’s jewellery was also deposited with a bank to arrange the remaining amount.
The student’s maternal uncle said she was exceptionally intelligent and had studied at university on a scholarship. She wanted to go to the United States and become a scientist in physics at Harvard University.
The student’s dreams were shattered when the documents provided by the agent, who had lured her with promises of admission to Harvard University, turned out to be fake.
According to her uncle, all the documents provided by the agent—including the university admission documents, visa and bank statement—were fake when they were checked.
In her final message to her uncle, the student mentioned the fraud committed against her and said, “Don’t tell Abu; he will die.”
It may be recalled that the body of a 20-year-old student was found hanging from a tree within the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station on Friday. The deceased was identified as a 20-year-old student enrolled at the International University.
According to police officials, the student’s body was found in a green belt near Sunday Bazaar. The student had paid Rs5 million to an agent to travel to the United States. She was under severe mental stress after discovering that the documents were fake.
Police said she had left home without informing her family at around 2pm. Her family reached the green belt with the help of her mobile phone’s location.
