NEW YORK — Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Bryan Thompson, will appear in a Pennsylvania courtroom on state charges. Authorities say he faces several offenses, including carrying a firearm without a license.

The Blair County District Attorney’s Office has asked federal authorities to transfer Mangione from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Officials scheduled a pretrial motion hearing for November 7 and want him to attend in person.

Prosecutors have requested the U.S. Marshal’s Service to release Mangione temporarily into the custody of the Blair County Sheriff’s Department. This transfer would let him appear for the Pennsylvania proceedings before returning to federal detention.

Mangione allegedly shot and killed Bryan Thompson with a 9 mm handgun equipped with a silencer on a Midtown Manhattan street on December 4, 2024. The killing sparked a multi-day manhunt that ended with Mangione’s capture in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Law enforcement agencies from multiple states worked together to track him down.

Pennsylvania prosecutors filed several charges against Mangione, including forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of a crime, and giving false identification to law enforcement. These charges are separate from the murder case in New York.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges in both state and federal courts. If convicted on federal counts, he could face the death penalty. Prosecutors have not confirmed if they plan to seek that punishment, but it remains an option under federal law.

Legal experts say handling two sets of charges in two different states will require close coordination. Courts must align schedules, transfers, and custody agreements to ensure the legal process runs smoothly. Federal authorities must approve any temporary release before Pennsylvania officials can move him for the hearing.

The Blair County District Attorney’s Office aims to move its case forward before New York begins its murder trial. The November 7 hearing will cover pretrial motions, including evidence procedures and witness lists. Blair County Sheriff’s deputies will handle his transport and security during the proceedings. After the hearing, they will return him to federal custody in New York unless the court issues new orders.

Mangione’s legal battles have gained national attention because of the high-profile nature of the case. UnitedHealthcare has not released new statements since it mourned Thompson’s death in earlier comments. The outcome of the Pennsylvania case could affect the schedule of his New York trial. With many charges pending in two jurisdictions, the legal process may take months or even years.

Mangione remains in federal detention while both state and federal prosecutors prepare their cases. He continues to deny all allegations and insists on his innocence through his attorneys. Authorities say they plan to pursue justice for Bryan Thompson while ensuring that Mangione receives a fair trial under the law.

The upcoming pretrial hearing on November 7 will mark the next major step in this complex and closely watched legal case.
