Khwaja Asif hints at action inside Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has hinted that Pakistan may take action inside Afghanistan if cross-border terrorism continues to escalate.

Speaking on a private TV programme, Khawaja Asif said Pakistan will not ignore the recent surge in terrorist attacks and will respond firmly if the presence of terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan worsens.

He noted that the Afghan Taliban’s condemnation and expressions of regret over terror incidents are merely verbal and do not reflect sincerity. He added that most of the terrorists involved in recent attacks were Afghan nationals, emphasizing that there are no terrorist hideouts inside Pakistan.

Referring to the recent security operation at Wana Cadet College, the minister said the Pakistan Army successfully safeguarded the lives of cadets, calling it a blessing of Allah.

Khawaja Asif also accused India of using Afghanistan as a base for aggression against Pakistan. He warned that no one should be under the illusion that India’s hostile intentions are hidden anymore, stressing that Pakistan remains on high alert and fully prepared to respond to any provocation from its neighbour.

The minister further said that while friendly countries may attempt mediation, Pakistan has no trust in verbal assurances from the Afghan Taliban, especially when no one in the international community believes them either. He added that mediators clearly understand India’s involvement behind the scenes.

Asif revealed that terrorists are being funded through Indian consulates operating in Afghanistan and affirmed that Pakistan will employ all available diplomatic options to address the situation.
