‘It’s too soon for face-to-face peace talks between the US and Iran’, Trump

⏱ 3 minute read
US Iran potential deal to end the war

President Trump told the media on Wednesday morning it is “too soon” to start thinking about face-to-face peace talks between US and Iran despite reports that the two sides are about to reach a potential deal to end their 67-day conflict.

US officials and sources close to the White House have claimed that a one-page Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been drafted to formally end the war between the United States and Iran and to establish a new framework for nuclear negotiations.

According to the sources, both sides are now closer to an agreement than at any point since the conflict began.

A report by the American news outlet Axios states that the US is awaiting Iran’s final response on several key points within the next 48 hours.

Although no document has been signed yet, former President Donald Trump’s close advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are in continuous contact with Iranian officials, both directly and through mediators.

According to Axios, the proposed agreement includes the following key points:

End of War: The war in the region will be officially declared over immediately after the MOU is signed.

30-Day Window: Within 30 days of the agreement, detailed negotiations will take place in Islamabad or Geneva to finalize discussions on sanctions relief and the nuclear program.

Strait of Hormuz: During this 30-day period, Iran will gradually lift restrictions on shipping, while the US will ease its naval blockade.

Nuclear Program Limits: Iran is considering halting uranium enrichment for 12 to 15 years, while the US is demanding a 20-year halt.

Transfer of Enriched Uranium

The report states that Iran has reportedly agreed to transfer its highly enriched uranium out of the country. One proposal suggests that this material could be moved to the United States—marking a significant shift from Tehran’s previous policy.

In return, the US would release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets and gradually ease sanctions.

Challenges and Uncertainty

The White House believes that Iran’s leadership is currently divided into different factions, which may make reaching a consensus difficult.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the situation as “extremely complex and technical.” While expressing hope for a diplomatic resolution, he also criticized certain elements within the Iranian leadership, indicating that mutual trust has not yet been fully restored.

It was also made clear that if the negotiations fail, the US reserves the right to reinstate the naval blockade and resume military operations.
