Web Desk: China’s state broadcaster has aired the first public footage of an export-ready version of its J-35A stealth fighter, offering a rare look at what analysts say is the country’s next-generation warplane for overseas buyers, with Pakistan widely viewed as a likely customer.

The aircraft appeared during a special May 1 Labour Day programme on state-run CCTV, where a model marked “001” rolled out of a hangar bearing the logo of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country’s leading military aircraft manufacturer. Notably, the jet carried AVIC branding instead of insignia from the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, signaling its intended export role.

Although China has previously displayed scaled models of the aircraft at international defence exhibitions, this broadcast marked the first time a full-scale export configuration commonly referred to as the J-35AE was shown in what appeared to be an operational form.

As a result, the footage has drawn significant attention from defence observers. Hong Kong-based military analyst Liang Guoliang described the aircraft as a “complete product” prepared for international delivery, suggesting it has moved beyond the prototype stage.

The aircraft shown in the broadcast features a teal-coated electro-optical targeting system (EOTS), a component associated with advanced tracking and targeting performance. This system enhances the jet’s ability to operate in contested environments by improving resistance to infrared detection, laser interference and multi-spectrum surveillance.

Moreover, the EOTS appears to be embedded within the fuselage rather than mounted externally. This design choice is consistent with stealth aircraft requirements, as external pods can increase radar visibility and reduce survivability.

The emergence of the J-35AE underscores China’s ambitions to expand its footprint in the global defence market, particularly in the high-end fighter segment traditionally dominated by Western manufacturers.

At the same time, the potential export of such advanced platforms could reshape regional security dynamics, especially if delivered to key partners. While Chinese authorities have not confirmed any buyers, defence analysts increasingly point to Pakistan as a probable recipient.

Meanwhile, the unveiling signals Beijing’s continued progress in developing and marketing fifth-generation fighter technology, positioning itself as a competitive supplier in an evolving global arms landscape.
