India’s long-range nuclear-capable ICBM programme draws global security concerns

Web Desk: India is moving closer to testing its next-generation intercontinental ballistic missile Agni 6, even as political tensions and unrest in its northeastern state of Manipur underscore broader security challenges at home.

Officials linked to India’s defence research establishment say the Agni-6 missile is nearing readiness for testing, with final approval pending from the government. The system is expected to significantly extend India’s strike range and carry multiple nuclear warheads, marking a step beyond its current capabilities.

The development follows earlier tests of longer-range systems and signals a continued expansion of India’s strategic deterrence. While the country’s existing arsenal already covers regional rivals such as Pakistan and China, analysts say the extended range could broaden its reach beyond Asia.

However, the reported range of the Agni-6 has raised questions among observers about India’s long-term strategic goals. Some experts argue the capability may be aimed at strengthening deterrence in a shifting global security environment, while others warn it could complicate relations with major powers, including the United States.

Washington’s response remains uncertain. Previous US administrations have generally supported India’s role as a regional counterweight but have shown caution about capabilities that extend beyond its immediate neighborhood. It is unclear whether any future expansion could trigger diplomatic friction or economic pressure.

Meanwhile, commentary from some former military figures in India has added to the debate, with hardline rhetoric surfacing in public discussions about potential responses to international criticism or sanctions.

The evolving missile programme has also entered political discourse abroad. Some US political voices have focused on missile threats from other regions, prompting counterarguments that India’s growing capabilities should also be part of the conversation.

Despite the debate, Indian officials have not publicly framed the programme as targeting specific distant adversaries, instead maintaining that its doctrine remains rooted in deterrence.

At the same time, internal security concerns persist. In Manipur, civil society groups called for a shutdown in Tengnoupal district following the arrest of a local leader, intensifying tensions in an already fragile environment.

The unrest comes amid renewed efforts by the central government to resume dialogue with Kuki-Zo armed groups under the Suspension of Operations agreement, after a pause of several weeks. Authorities aim to stabilise the situation following a fresh wave of ethnic strain.

Separately, reports from the region described confrontations between local residents and security forces, highlighting deep-seated grievances and mistrust among sections of the population.

Taken together, the developments reflect the dual challenges facing India as it advances its strategic capabilities while managing complex domestic dynamics. As the government weighs the timing of the Agni-6 test, both regional security considerations and internal stability are likely to remain in focus.
